After completing his Ph.D. in Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia Bob became a Research Associate at Cornell University and quickly was advanced to the position as senior researcher for New York State's Instructional Support System for Occupational Education (ISSOE) at the Cornell Institute for Occupational Education. After Cornell he became the Director of Institutional Research and Grants Officer for Tompkins-Cortland Community College and also served as the Executive Director of the College's Foundation.
In 1983 he founded CORSEARCH, Inc., (currently known as CT-CORSEARCH) a research company in New York City that provided intellectual property research to major law firms and Fortune 500® companies. He grew CORSEARCH to become the second largest intellectual property research firm that specialized in trademark research in the world and in 1996 he sold the company to T/SF Communications, a public holding company in Tulsa. He remained active at CORSEARCH until May, 1998.
During his leadership of CORSEARCH he became the founding member and member of the Board of Governors of the Brand Names Education Foundation. In addition, served as co-chair of the International Trademark Association's Internet Domain Names Task Force. In that capacity he gave papers regarding the conflicts and problems between trademarks and domain names at Harvard University, the American Bar Association, the New York and New Jersey State Bar Association's, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee and the Kennedy School at the Annenberg Program Offices in Washington D.C.
In 1998 Bob moved to Austin, Texas and became an active member of the Texas Angel Investors. He mentored many early stage companies, helping them to better position their products or services or define their marketing strategy. At times he has assumed interim senior management roles at some of these companies (both public and private) to help them through specific situations. In 2001 he co-founded Bluespan, Inc. a wireless technology company that designed and manufactured products to help keep people, property and pets from getting lost or misplaced. He left Bluespan in 2006 and has returned to the field of trademarks. He currently is President of Illuminor, LLC, a company located in Chevy Chase, Maryland where he serves as an expert witness in trademark infringement matters. His focus is on disputes and oppositions concerning likelihood of confusion, dilution, generic and descriptive trademarks.
Since graduating from Missouri he has been an active member of the University of Missouri's College of Education both at the Columbia, Missouri and St. Louis campuses. He has served for over 10 years as the representative for the Columbia campus's College of Education on the University's National Steering Committee as well as serving on the College of Education Dean's Advisory Council. He has received both the Outstanding Achievement in Education Award (1998) and the Outstanding Achievement in a Profession Other Than Education Award (2006) from the University of Missouri-Columbia Alumni Association and the College of Education Dean's Award for Innovative Uses of Technology in Education and Research (2006) from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. On December 17, 2006 Bob was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Education. He currently serves as a member of the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Education Leadership Advisory Counsel.
Bob has been extremely active in the International Trademark Association for over 20 years. In addition to being a Founding Member of the Brand Names Education Foundation, Bob has served INTA as follows:
